With our brand spanking new studio finally up and running, in 2023 we are inviting some talented teachers to run guest workshops for us in the glorious Hertfordshire countryside. As we’re all about sustainability, many of these classes will have an eco slant to them, whether that’s upcycling, stash-busting or giving items a new lease of life. Watch this space!
To that end, we’ve just got a new guest workshop up on the Ragged Life website – Weaving with Waste with Lucy Sugden.
The Ragged Life team have dipped our toe into weaving (as you’ll know from our peg loom weaving experiments), but sometimes it pays to get an expert in…
About our “Weaving with Waste” Workshop:
In this relaxed full day workshop, expert tutor Lucy will help you turn old fabric, wool, ribbon and textile offcuts into beautiful pieces of weaving which can be repurposed into art, cushions, bags, notebook covers… you name it. This class will teach you to look at your stash in a whole new light!
What you will learn:
- First Lucy will guide you through the design process to come up with an idea for your piece, thinking about colour, texture, size, and shape. Don’t worry, she has plenty of tips!
Here are a few pieces some of her past students have made to get your inspired:
- Then, Lucy will help you select your materials to bring your design to life. You’ll be in the Ragged Life studio, which has a great range of textiles and fibres to choose from, but if you have items from home that you’d like to incorporate, bring them along!
- And finally, you will learn the basic weaving techniques, including how to create patterning and sections.
By the end of the class, you’ll have the know-how and confidence to weave with waste at home.
Where and When?
We currently have one workshop scheduled with Lucy for 10:00-16:00 on Saturday, 30th September at Ragged Life HQ, The Stables, Delamere House, Great Wymondley, Hertfordshire, SG4 7ER.
Where can I book the Weaving with Waste Class?
As usual, you can book on the Ragged Life website here.
Who is this workshop for?
This class is suitable for complete weaving beginners, but could also be inspirational for those who have tried weaving before, as it allows the possibility to work with more unconventional materials.
What is included?
All equipment and materials are provided, but you are welcome to bring along anything interesting from home that you may like to incorporate into your piece. Hot drinks and biscuits are provided, but do please bring along a packed lunch.
And, just to get you even more inspired, here are some photos of some of Lucy’s work:
We hope to see you there!
